Former ENUFF Z'NUFF Guitarist DEREK FRIGO Passes Away
May 29, 2004Former ENUFF Z'NUFF guitarist Derek Frigo passed away Friday (May 28) at the age of 36. According to an online posting by Hollywood promoter Happenin' Harry, "A few girls had seen Derek at the nearest cross streets near his girlfriend's home in Beverly Hills [Friday] afternoon. I was told that Derek was found outside of his girlfriend's home laying on the sidewalk with his cell phone dialing 911 repeatedly." A posting on the official ENUFF Z'NUFFweb site reads: "The sad news has come that we have lost our brother Derek. An official statement will be released soon."
According to AntiMusic.com, Derek was the son of legendary Chicago violin virtuoso Johnny Frigo. He rose to fame in his own right as the lead guitarist of ENUFF Z'NUFF on their first three major label albums. Rolling Stone named ENUFF Z'NUFF best new band in 1991. During his time with the band, Derek was praised for his distinct tremolo-infused guitar solos. He left ENUFF Z'NUFF in 1992 and played in a number of groups since. His latest projects included gigs with his fellow former ENUFF Z'NUFF bandmate Vik Fox in Los Angeles based rock band LOGAN’S HEROES and playing with punk icon Texas Terri.
Last year, Frigo reunited with ENUFF Z’NUFF frontman Donnie Vie and original drummer Vik Fox for a couple of Los Angeles area shows. There was talk of an ENUFF Z’NUFF reunion tour later this year. Derek joined Donnie Vie in his home studio a few weeks ago and laid down tracks for the new ENUFF Z’NUFF CD.
